Building Information Modeling (BIM) is most commonly thought of as computer-generated 3D modeling of a construction project. This pseudo-fact is about as close to the mark as the first two definitions cited.
While a 3D model is certainly an important element of BIM, it is not in fact, or even pseudo-fact, BIM.
BIM has at least three essential elements:
- A 3D model, which is to say, a computer-generated visual representation, appearing, through computer generated perspectives, to have three dimensions.
- Symbology, the expression of information through symbols.
