lego schedule

I was talking with a project manager the other day who was  frustrated with his inability to effectively communicate his project plan to a diverse and busy group of stakeholders. Then it flashed in my mind’s eye: the idea of making a schedule out of LEGO.

A quick search of the web confirmed that I wasn’t the first person to think of this:

Although I find it improbable that anyone reading this is unfamiliar with LEGOs, they are small, plastic individual blocks that fit together. They are specially designed to inflict great pain when stepped upon by the bare feet of an adult.

Because the blocks come in different lengths and colors, it is practical to build a Gantt chart using Lego.  It would certainly satisfy the desire for stakeholders to engage physically in the process of planning, much like the Gilbane Card Trick or the LEAN planning sticky notes.

Can you imagine the fun of all of us sitting on the floor with a pile of color-coded blocks, building a model of the project plan?

All joking aside, this element of playful discovery and collaboration that you get when building with LEGOs is exactly what is missing from most interactive planning sessions. Until the invention of GPM and NetPoint, the tools were simply not available for a group to gather, discuss, and build a logic-tied network plan together.

Download a trial version of NetPoint, sit on the floor with your Surface Pro and a couple of team members and build a plan for your project.

After the plan is finished, you can each have a snack and take a nap.
